Review – What the Duke Desires by Sabrina Jeffries

what duke desiresI was sad when the Hellions of Halstead Hall series ended because I had loved it so much!  Fear not, because Sabrina Jeffries has now introduced us to “The Duke’s Men” and I for one am excited about this new series.

The short version premise is Tristan and Lisette Bonnaud are the illegitimate children of a viscount.  When he unexpectedly dies, the heir and new viscount, George, casts the siblings and their mother out of their home and disowns his younger brother Dom for defending them.  Now, years later, Dom is running an investigations firm with Lisette’s help.  Tristan is unable to be in England because of charges lodged against him by George.

Our hero, Max, is the Duke of Lyons and he seeks out Dom to help him locate Tristan and decipher a cryptic message he received.  Instead, he ends up with Lisette and they take off on a journey to find Tristan and fall in love.  Their banter is funny and keeps the two of them on their toes.  It was entertaining and her steamy scenes always strike a good balance between not enough and way too much.

I loved this book.  Sabrina Jeffries writes such wonderful historic romances and this is a quick read mostly because you won’t want to put the book down once you start.  I also think this series will be similar to the Hellions because I get the feeling there is an underlying mystery that has yet to reveal itself – completely based on an offhand comment in the epilogue.  Maybe I’m wrong, but time will tell.

Sabrina Jeffries is one of my go-to authors.  When I see she has a new book, I’m getting it immediately because I know I won’t be disappointed.  I also want to point out how much I love the cover of the book.  I had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina at a book signing and she let us see two potential covers they were deciding between.  It’s very cool to see the final decision and I think it’s gorgeous.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.  Give me your thoughts in the comments below.

Finding Our Tribe

By Susan MallerySusan-Mallery-blue-jacket-web

With more than 25 million books sold worldwide, New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery is known for creating characters who feel as real as the folks next door, and for putting them into emotional, often funny situations readers recognize from their own lives. Susan’s books have made Booklist’s Top 10 Romances list in four out of five consecutive years. RT Book Reviews says, “When it comes to heartfelt contemporary romance, Mallery is in a class by herself.” With her popular, ongoing Fool’s Gold series, Susan has reached new heights on the bestsellers lists and has won the hearts of countless new fans.

Susan grew up in southern California, moved so many times that her friends stopped writing her address in pen, and now has settled in Seattle with her husband and the most delightfully spoiled little dog who ever lived. Visit Susan online at

I think that deep down, everyone wants to belong. It’s hard-wired into our DNA. When we’re alone, truly alone, we feel lost, adrift. We need to know that someone cares about us. We need to care about others, to be connected to the world around us in some way. We need to be part of a tribe.

Almost all of us do it, all our lives. We either join a community or we form one. We have our families, our friends, our clubs, our churches and schools. We’re brought together by blood or shared interest or just a snarky sense of humor. We meet a like-minded soul, and we know immediately, we belong to the same tribe.

Have you ever become instant friends with someone just because she reads romance? Me, too! That’s what I’m talking about. We’re all part of the romance-reading tribe. We bond over our belief in happy endings.

Intellectually, Felicia Swift, heroine of TWO OF A KIND, my latest Fool’s Gold romance, understands that she needs a tribe. And emotionally, she feels it. Deeply. But she doesn’t know how to get there. She’s one of the smartest people in the world, but her intelligence seems to push people away. Even her parents. They gave her up when she was four, intimidated by her freakish smarts. (It didn’t help that she built a bomb.) They allowed Felicia to be raised on a university campus, where she was fed, clothed, challenged, educated… but never loved.

Felicia has moved to Fool’s Gold, typical small-town America, to learn how to interact with normal people so she can become one of them. She longs to fit in. She served as a logistics expert in the Army for years, and found a community there, but it was a life she was in almost by default. What she truly yearns for is to find her tribe, to fall in love, to have a family.

Men tend to be more solitary than women, but underneath, they need a tribe, too. Even if their tribe consists of just one or two other people. Gideon Boylan doesn’t think so. When he was a prisoner of war, he watched his buddies break, one by one, weakened by the families they loved back home. Gideon was the only survivor because, as he saw it, he had no one to miss.

Felicia thinks there’s safety in numbers, and Gideon feels that safety lies in the number one. Bet you can guess who turns out to be right!

Review – Two of A Kind by Susan Mallery

Published June 25, 2013 by The Book Momster

Rating – 5 stars

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review!

Like a fine wine that gets better with age, so does Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold series.  Mallery has created an amazing town that gives us love stories with warmth and depth and integrates past characters in such a way that first-time readers don’t feel as if they’ve missed out.  Typically by Book 12 in any series, I feel like the author is just phoning it in.  I have doubts Mallery even owns a phone!

Two of A Kind is the book that finally gives us the story of the oh so mysterious Gideon.  Gideon was introduced in last year’s books as the new owner of the local radio station.  All we knew was that he had once spent almost 2 years in a Taliban prison before being rescued.   As excited as I was about getting his story, I did have concerns about reading about his imprisonment and torture.  I’m happy to say Mallery wrote those scenes in such a way that we get the detail we desire, but I wasn’t left feeling emotionally traumatized when it was over.  Another credit to Mallery’s superb writing skills.

Our heroine is Felicia, introduced in the last book, Just One Kiss.  I love her!  She’s too smart for her own good and socially awkward, so watching her navigate social interactions and falling in love is so much fun.  Felicia and Gideon have a past – she found him in a bar in Thailand and had a one night stand, so we’re allowed to jump right in to their story.

Gideon and Felicia are both outsiders in Fool’s Gold, but the town welcomes them and accepts them as one of their own and I loved that part of the story involves both of them coming in as outsiders and finding a sense of belonging in the town.  In the end, their story of overcoming separate obstacles to find happiness and love in the end was worth waiting for.

Yes, there is a twist in the story.  However, I admit I wasn’t surprised by it because I read the “Who’s Who in Fool’s Gold” on Susan’s website before reading this story.  That said, I actually enjoyed it because it gave a new perspective on Gideon and Felicia.  Secondary to their story are the hilarious antics of Eddie, Gladys, and Denise Hendrix.  The older generation of Fool’s Gold is starting to compete with the actual love story as the best part of the book and I LOVE IT!  I was laughing out loud in a couple of scenes.

Simply put – I loved this book.  I am recommending it to everyone I see.  If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading this book or the Fool’s Gold series, please do.  You will not be disappointed.  After all, Fool’s Gold is the land of happy endings.
